Projector Screen Support

This projector screen support earned us some bonus points with our friends. We wanted a cheap and simple way to watch movies on a big screen that we could take with us in the car on cycling and skiing trips. We bought a $30, 100-inch projection screen on Amazon but then needed a way to properly support it.

I came up with this design which can be easily taken apart and packed into an old ski bag. I used construction grade 1 x 4-inch (nominal) SPF boards, trimmed 1/4 inch off of each edge to make them nice and square, and finished them with cedar-coloured deck stain. Half-lap joints were used at the bolted connections of the frame to help keep it square and not sag under it’s own weight.

At 20 lb (9 kg), it’s quite a bit heavier than metal or fiberglass support stands available online, but it’s also very sturdy and can easily be used outdoors. And there’s the satisfaction of having made it yourself and getting compliments on it. Paired with a basic RCA projector, some bluetooth speakers, and a smartphone, it makes an inexpensive and portable home theatre system for watching Netflix.
