Fork-Mount Bike Stand

We don’t like transporting our bikes on the outside of the car so I built this fork-mount bike stand to hold them upright inside the back of the SUV. It was made specifically for our gravel bikes which use thru-axles for the wheels, but the design could be easily modified for use with quick-release skewers.

It just consists of a frame made from 2 x 2-inch (nominal) pine with spacer blocks in the middle to fit between the front fork of the bike. I originally had the spacer blocks mounted on the top of a 2 x 6-inch board, which worked fine with the old SUV but turned out to be a problem with the lower headroom in the new SUV. The frame allowed me to lower the blocks just enough fit my bike’s handlebars within the ceiling space.

A piece of 1/2-inch diameter copper pipe is fitted between the spacer blocks to guide insertion of the thru-axle. Small cradles (one on each side) hold the fork in the correct position to align the holes in the fork blades with the pipe.
